Macaron is Not Macaroon and is Definitely Not Macaroni

The difference between macaron, macaroon and macaroni is not just in the spelling. Only one of these goes well with pasta sauce; that’s for sure!

Believe it or not, many people have mistaken macarons with macaroons… And to make it even more interesting, some think that the macaron is a macaroni! It can certainly be confusing for those who are not into cooking or baking, so we are here to set the record straight. Check out two important things below to learn the difference in these three amazing food items.

1. Two are pastries and one is a noodle.

Macaron and macaroon are both sweet baked pastry delights. In our first blog post entitled “Macaron: The French Dessert Cookies You Never Knew You Loved”, we talked all about the macaron cookie and how it has evolved from being a simple single layer sweet treat into a mini dessert sandwich of sorts. At Macaron Zone, we specialize in French macarons that you can enjoy in different flavors and box sizes; don’t forget to shop your pick right here when you’re done reading this post.

On the other hand, macaroons are a special type of cookie made with egg whites, sugar and most importantly, shredded coconuts. This is what gives them their flaky yet dense texture and irregular shape. Unlike macarons, they are easier to make as ingredients are mainly folded in together, dropped into a baking sheet and baked until golden brown. Many new bakers typically try making this dessert because of the ease of preparation and creation.

And you might have figured out by now that macaroni is the pasta noodle, but did you know that macaron and macaroni are both derived from the Italian word “maccherone” meaning fine dough (thanks to All Recipes for that fun trivia)? No wonder there is only a slight variation in the word structure! These noodles are made from durum wheat and are typically tubular in shape. Having a thick shape makes it perfect for sauces to allow for maximum absorption (just think of your favorite mac and cheese).

2. It is a matter of the vowels.

In the age of auto-correct and predictive text, it’s worth a shot to do a double take on how you spell certain words. While they may look very similar, these foods have minor contrasts in spelling. Macaron is spelled with only one letter “O”, whereas macaroon has two. Macaroni looks just like macaron but with a letter “I” added at the end. Surely, you can get this right if you join a spelling bee in the future.
